This series traces back to Counterstories, a magazine I ran as a collective in college. The name says most of it — we started the magazine to tell the stories the mainstream media wasn't telling, the ones that got flattened or left out entirely. Alongside those community stories, we ran sections on book reviews, pop-culture, and reviews of small independent theater productions around Chicago. We met once a month and handled all the printing ourselves.
The first piece in this series was digital. The ones that followed moved into acrylic, newspaper, spray paint, cut-outs, and oil — materials that carry their own history and layering, not unlike the magazine itself, built by hand from whatever we had.
